Scope of Work
The project scope included full replacement of 19 tainter style flood gates, gate sills, and gate guide angles. Originally constructed in 1926, the dam is approximately 2,000 feet long and 125 feet high.
Project Details
- Utilized a 230-ton Manitowoc 888 crane to support all offloading, pre-assembly, and demolition activities
- Utilized a 182-ton Manitowoc MLC165 positioned on a 60-foot x 60-foot barge to support material handling activities on the dam
- Designed, fabricated, and installed access ladders and stairs
- Refurbished, relocated, and installed three sets of steel bulkheads
- Removed and demolished 19 existing flood gates (measuring 26-feet by 22-feet and weighing approximately 30,000 pounds)
- Removed and replaced 19 sets of stainless steel gate sills and guide angles
- Placed 2,315 cubic feet of grout for the new guide angles and sills
- Field machined 38 trunnion pins
- Pre-assembled, installed, and tested 19 new tainter style flood gates
- Assembled and installed two new gantry cranes weighing 50,000 pounds each
Lean, Innovative and Unique Project Solutions
Access was one of the most challenging aspects of the project. Because the dam is 2,000 feet long and 125 feet high, equipment placement, material handling, and personnel access were strategically planned. The geometry of the concrete spillways relative to the configuration of the new gates made the alignment engineering very challenging. ҹɫÊÓƵ engineers designed an intricate ladder and stair system for accessing the downstream face of the dam. The system was needed for accessing and modifying the existing trunnion pins, inspecting the spillway, and replacing the gate sills, and guide angles.
